Melinda Kennedy’s Story
How would you feel?
If you were a little deaf boy or deaf girl and your Sunday School teacher would never teach you anything about God. Why? Because she believed that deaf people could not be saved! That would make you feel pretty badly about yourself, wouldn’t it? That’s what happened to Melinda Kennedy. Here’s her story.
Unfortunately this story is more common than you may think
Many good, well meaning people just don’t understand about the Deaf world or the Deaf culture. One of the best ways to begin learning is by learning the language of the Deaf. In North America that is American Sign Language. It is the fourth most used language in the US today. It is beautiful and very powerful. It does take some effort and some time to learn, but it is a fun language to use. We need more people to learn ASL because it is the gateway into understanding the Deaf culture.
If you live in the Anderson, Indiana area, learn ASL with us
Our next round of classes for intermediate and beginners will begin in February. The cost for a 12 week class is only $100 (plus the cost of the text book and video resources.) High school or college age students or parents of Deaf children get 1/2 off tuition. If you don’t live close to us, look to see if there is a good ASL class in your local school system or through a community college. If you can find one with a Deaf teacher, that would be ideal. We prefer the curriculum available from Dawn Sign Press but there are other resources out there as well. Visit our “Other Links” page for some good ideas.
Keep watching for more videos in our Faces of Silent Blessings series. And if the Lord is urging you to get more involved, please, make a gift to this ministry. It will be an investment in the spiritual life of a Deaf child. Isn’t that a worthwhile effort?
