Fanmail Excerpts
Silent Blessings is a resource development ministry, bringing foundational faith concepts to deaf children and their families using American Sign Language (ASL). We produce the Dr. Wonder’s Workshop TV program, ASL music videos, and Christian curriculum. We also have a one-on-one ministry to those who send us email and letters from around the world.
Though Dr. Wonder’s Workshop is developed with children in mind, our mailbox tells us that it is a blessing to people of all ages and some life situations we hadn’t imagined. From school rooms to prison cells, New York to Texas, the U.S. to Bangladesh, the gospel is reaching out in ASL through Dr. Wonder’s Workshop. Here are a few excerpts:
From J B, age 9, Florida: “I am a cancer survivor. I love your TV show. I never missed your show on Saturdays.”
From the M family, Nebraska: “My daughter loves your show. She’s not deaf, but a couple of kids at the library have a deaf mother. [They sign, and] my daughter became very interested in sign language. We home school, and as part of our lessons try to learn a new word every week. Watching your show makes it very real for her and helps her learn it. Thank you & God bless!”
From A B, Oregon: “The reason I like the show is mostly the way that it is presented. At first it seemed geared towards kids, but it is really for the whole family. The lessons to be learned from the show apply to a broad spectrum. More importantly, it embraces God and Jesus without forcing a particular [denomination]. It instills core values that are good for any Christian family. And the music interludes are wonderful. . . . I am a 32 year old man in prison, and this show helped me to learn things that will help me to be a better person when I return to society in a few years.”
From J G, Pennsylvania: “I am a deaf inmate. . . . I really like your television program and I get a lot out of it. There aren’t many programs that I can follow due to being deaf. . . . Is it possible you can come visit me?”
From C H, Texas: “Your TV shows do a good job of teaching us to be like Jesus wants us to be. . . . I watch one of your shows every day. May God bless you & defend you, body, soul, & spirit & all that pertains to you & your shows. May they reach many with God’s love.”
Amen to that!
We have a few people who have become pen pals, telling us of their dreams, love interests, health and social troubles, and even the movies they’ve recently watched. This is one way we are doing one-on-one ministry, being Jesus to people who have few or none else to communicate with.
You’re welcome to write us — we’ll be happy to write back.
