More on Sylvia

August 7th, 2011

We’re proud to tell you a bit more about Sylvia Stoner, our regular volunteer.

Behind-the-scenes workers, by definition, often don’t get the recognition they earn. But take a moment to imagine what a disaster any endeavor would be without them.

Sylvia has known Marshall and Terry since their college days together. Naturally, she was interested in hearing presentations about the ministry, and those led her to get involved. She volunteered on occasions before retiring. Then, she says, “when the opportunity came to participate on a regular basis, it was a natural fit.”

Here’s more of what Sylvia had to say:

I volunteer at Silent Blessings because it gives me the opportunity to serve. I spent my career in the Human Service field and this work is an extension of what I did for 35 years.

I love that I can give back to others. I appreciate having the opportunity to work with people who are passionate about what they do, and to learn more about Deaf culture.

Sylvia is one of two people here that do not sign. We have a fair amount of work that does not require signing and is not seen by by the public. Managing those tasks frees the skilled signing staff to focus on development of resources for reaching d/Deaf kids and their families. Sylvia, like many of us, believes that “all work done for the Lord is important work regardless of its purpose.”

Sylvia’s dreams for the ministry mirror our own. Seeing the Silent Blessings resources available around the world and that all deaf people have the opportunity to learn the love of Jesus. The VBS curriculum being published and accepted for standard use. Development of a graded Sunday School curriculum for standard use. That all Deaf people with their unique gifts be accepted into society without isolation as the result of the work being done here. These are goals we can all support and work toward.

We’re thankful to Sylvia for generously giving her time and energy to the daunting details of files management and whatever else pops up. She is truly a gift and an important member of the team.
