Glossary of Terms

We use “Deaf” as an inclusive term for all Deaf, DeafBlind, DeafDisabled, and late-deafened children.

We use “Hard of Hearing” as an inclusive term for all Hard of Hearing and Unilateral.

Deaf Being:
Deaf individuals have heart, mind, soul, and strength. We have a voice, a feeling, a way of thinking, and a matter of perspective. Our connection to other human beings matters. Society says we don’t have any part of it. If we look at the medical and educational views of how specialists see us – they don’t know the fullness of our lives as God’s image bearers. They see our ears, and it stops there. There is so much more to being Deaf. God created amazing things like 300+ beautiful sign languages worldwide. We have a robust global community connection. Deaf Being is a way of knowing God is the author of our culture, language, way of life, and a call to declare the greatness of our Creator, the King of the universe.

CODA:
It is an acronym for Child of Deaf Adults, referring to children who can hear and speak and are raised by Deaf parents. Although they can hear and speak, American Sign Language is their heart language. CODA children’s experiences are unique and exceptional. Often, biblical resources aren’t available for them and their Deaf parents. We aim to support CODA children to know they are a gem and find loving and supportive relationships. We desire to include CODA children connected with Jesus by empowering them to flourish in bilingual and bicultural resources and church environments.
